Group helps older workers transition back into workforce

Any older residents who are having trouble finding work can now turn to a nonprofit group for help.

Experience Works is operating a Senior Community Service Employment Program, or SCSEP, in 43 Indiana counties, including Porter, LaPorte, Newton, Jasper, Starke and Pulaski counties.

The program offers paid community services gigs at public and nonprofit organization, as well as training, job search assistance and referrals. The hope is the community service will springboard participants into long-term jobs.

To participate, residents must be 55 or older and have an income of less than $19,663 for a family of two, or less than $14,588 if it’s a single-person household. Services are free for qualified applicants.

“In this difficult economy, many older Hoosiers are finding it necessary to find work,” Indiana Office Administrator for Experience Works Stephanie Brown said. “Unfortunately, finding a job can be especially difficult for older workers who have not looked for employment for some time or for those who been unsuccessful in their job hunt. Our program is a stepping stone for people desperate for work. We can provide immediate assistance and wages, for those who qualify for the SCSEP.”
