Pulaski County E.M.S. Shift Captain

Pulaski County Emergency Medical Services is seeking candidates to fill a full-time shift-captain position.

Under the supervision of the EMS Director, the Captain is responsible for managing day-to-day operations, performing all EMT or Paramedic duties, and providing leadership to ensure the highest standard of patient care and team performance.

Full-time E.M.S. personnel work approximately 56 hours per week on average, with about 32 hours of scheduled overtime over a two-week pay period. The 2025 pay rate for this position varies based on experience and whether the selected candidate holds current basic-E.M.T., advanced-E.M.T., or paramedic certification. These are the starting rates for each level of shift captain, but the actual rate may be higher based on experience:

• Basic-E.M.T. Captain: $15.28/hour ($22.92/hour overtime), for an approximate annual compensation of $51,035;
• Advanced-E.M.T. Captain: $17.11/hour ($22.66/hour overtime), for an approximate annual compensation of $54,623; and
• Paramedic Captain: $20.78 ($31.17/hour overtime), for an approximate annual compensation of $69,405.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• completing and submitting all reports/documents to billing in a timely manner, verifying reports from other personnel on shift, and ensuring proper documentation of critical interventions;
• sending charts to the medical director for review;
• ensuring daily and monthly checks, audits of all ambulances, and assigned chores are completed promptly and accurately;
• coordinating staff scheduling ;
• making informed decisions based on EMS and County policy manuals;
• identifying and forwarding potential policy or protocol violations to the EMS Director;
• distributing shift reports with updated information;
• participating in and contributing to organizational committees;
• taking on specialized roles as assigned;
• fostering a positive and collaborative work environment;
• mentoring and coaching junior staff;
• developing and implementing conflict resolution strategies;
• providing emergency coverage;
• planning and participating in inter-agency disaster preparedness drills and ensuring EMS readiness; and
• organizing or leading public education and outreach events.
